r-point deficit, but the Nuggets pulled
(Sports Network) - Philadelphia Phillies pitchers have delivered a quality start in each of the teams last five games, a streak that began with an outstanding performance out of Cole Hamels. Mike DeVito Jersey . The former World Series MVP will be out to duplicate that sensational last showing when the current National League East leaders wrap up a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves today at Citizens Bank Park. Hamels yielded one run and struck out eight over eight innings this past Tuesday against St. Louis, although he wound up without a decision in a 2-1, 10-inning Phillies victory. The left-handers effort turned out to be contagious, as teammate Kyle Kendrick fired eight scoreless frames versus the Cardinals the following night before staff ace Roy Halladay tossed seven innings of two-run ball in Thursdays finale of that series. Even graybeard Jamie Moyer got in on the act, with the 47-year-old becoming the oldest pitcher in major league history to throw a shutout in Fridays clash with the Braves. Atlanta mustered only two hits off the ageless lefty in that contest. Joe Blanton followed up Moyer with six solid innings in yesterdays game, but was hurt by one bad stretch as the Braves evened this set with a 4-1 verdict. After shutting Atlanta out over the first five frames, he surrendered four hits and three runs in the deciding top of the sixth. Blanton pitched extremely well, said Phillies acting manager Pete Mackanin. He looked like he knew what he was doing. We had our opportunities, especially early, but we just couldnt get that spark. We didnt play bad, we just didnt produce. Kris Medlen, making an emergency start in place of the injured Jair Jurrjens, teamed up with six Atlanta relievers to keep Philadelphias potent offense under wraps. Medlen worked the first 4 1/3 innings and allowed nine hits -- all singles -- and one run without issuing a walk. Eric Hinske had an RBI double and both Melky Cabrera and Troy Glaus singled in runs for the Braves, who won for only the second time in their last 12 road tests. We had that big inning where we put up a few runs and it was nice, said Hinske. It hasnt happened for us lately and hopefully this is the start of things to come. Hamels fanned 10 San Francisco Giants in just six innings prior to Tuesdays gem, and received a no-decision in that game as well. The 2007 All-Star was matched up against Adam Wainwright and Tim Lincecum -- two of the NLs premier hurlers -- but today will go head-to-head with the Braves Kenshin Kawakami, a pitcher who hasnt notched a win since August of last season. Kawakami enters this afternoons rubber match having lost each of his first five starts of 2010. While a lack of run support has played a part in the Japanese transports 0-5 record, he also hasnt pitched particularly well in recent games. The 34-year-old was reached for five runs (four earned) and walked four over 4 1/3 shaky innings in a loss at St. Louis on April 28, then permitted three runs in a five-inning stint against Washington this past Tuesday. Two of the seven hits he gave up were home runs. Kawakami did gave two good starts against the Phils in his first go-around in the majors last season, including a win at Citizens Bank Park in May in which he limited Philadelphia to two runs and struck out six in six innings. Hamels owns a 7-4 record with a 3.94 ERA in 14 lifetime encounters with the Braves and has posted a 2.91 ERA in three home starts this season. Philadelphia had a streak of four straight wins snapped with yesterdays defeat and fell to 6-3 on a 10-game homestand that concludes today. The team will have manager Charlie Manuel back in the dugout for the finale after missing Saturdays tilt to attend his daughters wedding. Mackanin ran the club in Manuels absence. The Phillies took two of three from the Braves in Atlanta last month and have prevailed in eight of the past 12 overall matchups between these divisional rivals. Torrey Smith Jersey . Deron Williams chipped in 23 points and 10 assists as the Jazz won for a second straight time after losing four of five. It was the start of a three- game homestand with contests upcoming against Cleveland on Thursday and Milwaukee Saturday. Von Miller Elite Jersey . The appropriate next step is for North Korea to return to the six-party talks and to resume deliberations in this context. And within that context, its possible to have bilateral interactions and other discussions, not just with the United States but with other countries, said Kurt Campbell, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Reggie Wayne Elite Jersey . You can watch the game live on TSN at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. Toronto will also visit Charlotte and is coming off Fridays 123-116 loss at home versus the Denver Nuggets. Linas Kleiza finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for the Raptors. Phil Rizzuto Yankees Jersey . [Agencies] BERN - Olympic champion Fabian Cancellara says he is too tired after a hard season to defend his world time trial championship in Italy this week. Anthony Fasano Jersey . Andre Iguodala added 13 points and nine assists and Elton Brand scored 10 for the Sixers, who have won two straight to improve to 2-2 on a five-game road trip that ends Saturday in Portland. Philadelphia moved a half-game ahead of New York for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings.DENVER - The Denver Nuggets climbed back into their series with the Lakers thanks to an energy and enthusiasm that was missing from the first two games in Los Angeles. Ty Lawson scored 25 points and the Nuggets raced to an early 24-point lead on their way to a 99-84 victory on Friday night in Game 3 of their first-round series. The Nuggets, who will try to even their best-of-seven series Sunday night at the Pepsi Center, got monster performances from two of their young big men: JaVale McGee and Kenneth Faried, both of whom tasted their first playoff success Friday night. "The game for us is all about our energy and our enthusiasm," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "Its not complicated for us. When we play poorly we dont play with enough energy, we dont push the pace and we take too many jump shots. "It was a fun win for me. I cant remember a win as much as I enjoyed this thing." Neither could McGee. "I was real timid in the first two games and I just wanted to be extremely aggressive in this game," said McGee, who had 16 points and 15 rebounds to go with Farieds 12 points and 15 rebounds. Together, they hounded Andrew Bynum, who finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds but was shut out in the first half, when the Nuggets raced to a 41-17 lead in the second quarter thanks to an astonishing 28-2 run. "It was huge," Lawson said. "Every game we played against the Lakers we were down. We were down early. We were down big. We were trying to fight our way back into the game, so we made a point that we wanted to come out early and see how they did with a deficit. "They reacted kind of well to it but we hung on." Denver led 55-39 at halftime. Then Bynum and Kobe Bryant got it going as the Lakers never got closer than four points and they faded in the fourth quarter, when they made just 3 of 14 shots. "Thats a big hole to put yourself in, to be down 24, especially in the first half, is tough playing against a team thats desperate," Lakers coach Mike Brown said. Bynums putback with 1:18 left in the third quarter not only pulled the Lakers to 68-64 but his inadvertent elbow on the play broke Al Harringtons nose. He didnt return, but the Nuggets went on a 12-5 run to regain their composure and control of the game. "I felt like they played really well," Bryant said. "They played with a lot of intensity and for us it was good learning experience. Im proud of the way we battled to get back into the game. We just couldnt get over the hump." Karl said he wasnt sure but suspectted Harrington will be back for Game 4. Denver Broncos Nike Jersey. Bryant finished with 22 points on 7-of-23 shooting after scoring 31 and 38 points in the two wins at the Staples Center. The Lakers never trailed in the games in Los Angeles, but once Danilo Gallinaris reverse layup with 8:07 left in first quarter gave Denver its first lead of the series, the Nuggets looked unstoppable. "Its been tiring always having to come from a hole and having to dig out of a hole, and the energy of the game becomes fatiguing mentally," Karl said before tipoff. Finally, it was the Lakers doing the chasing. The Nuggets used a 28-2 run spanning the first and second quarters to take a stunning 38-14 lead. Lawson scored 13 of the Nuggets points as they scored 20 of the final 22 points of the first quarter, then teamed with Corey Brewer and Harrington on a trio of 3-pointers to stretch Denvers lead to 41-17. "Everything was going right," McGee said. "We were passing the ball the right way, we were running, everything was working." And McGee shared the starring role, too. "Coach was trusting me with this game," McGee said, "and I feel like I didnt let him down." The Lakers had a lot of fight left in them, though. Bynums second three-point play made it 67-60, and when his next shot was blocked, Ramon Sessions grabbed the deflection and swished a short jumper to make it a five-point game. Bynums putback made it a four-point deficit, but the Nuggets pulled away again as Bryant, bothered by Gallinaris length, kept misfiring. "I wasnt on my sweet spots," Bryant said. "They tried to keep me more on the perimeter. I wasnt in the post a lot. I lived at the elbow the first two games and we got away from that a little bit in the second half. Pau (Gasol) as well. We saw him on the perimeter way too much. We cant do that. We have to stick to our ground and pound game." McGee said the young Nuggets are getting the feel of playoff basketball. "And were in Denver, were high altitude and were playing at a high level," he said. "So, its just a great feeling." Notes: Brown said he expects F Metta World Peace to be rested, not rusty when his suspension is over: "Hes working hard. Hes engaged. I think hell be fine. Obviously, you never know, but hes working his tail off and he is engaged and thats all you can ask for during this period." ... The Lakers have only squandered one 2-0 series lead, losing to the Phoenix Suns in 1993. ... Denvers seven turnovers were one shy of their all-time playoff low. ' ' '
